Join UR’s chapter of Phi Alpha Theta, the national history honor society!

 But, what is Phi Alpha Theta? Founded in 1921, Phi Alpha Theta is one of the oldest and most prestigious academic honor societies. Currently, there are over 800 chapters in the United States and Canada. Our chapter here at UR was established in 1948, and it is the oldest chapter in Virginia.

As a member of Phi Alpha Theta, you will be able to: 

  1. Wear the society’s honor cords during your graduation from the University.
  2. Add this honor to your resume/CV. 
  3. Travel with fellow UR students on fully-funded university trips to present your research at both regional and national historical conferences.
  4. Participate in PAT events such as cultural excursions to see historically inspired plays, films, and museums in and around Richmond.*
  5. Submit your work to be published in Phi Alpha Theta’s nationally recognized undergraduate academic journal, The Historian.
  6. Apply for prizes and scholarships (in fact, several of our students have won these prizes in the past).
  7. Take on possible leadership roles in our Exec Team.
