Introduction to Historical Thinking: The Southern Past
The recipient of numerous awards for his teaching and scholarship, Ayers was named U.S. Professor of the Year for Doctoral and Research Universities by the Carnegie Foundation for the Advancement of Teaching in 2003.
Research:
One of the nation's leading scholars on the history of the American South, he has authored or edited nine books, one of which was a finalist for both the Pulitzer Prize and the National Book Award. Ayers also pioneered in digital media with "The Valley of the Shadow: Two Communities in the American Civil War." In 2000, it won the first annual eLincoln Prize for best digital work on the era of the American Civil War.
